scientists have developed a simple blood test to detect breast cancer in women. Normal breast screening checks, using X-ray mammograms, detect a tumour only once it is three or four times bigger, by which time it may have started to spread beyond breast.
But, this test can pick up a cancer the size of a small seed before a woman has developed any symptoms.
Developed by the scientists, led by Norwegian company Diagenic ASA, the test looks for raised levels of chemical “markers” for cancer picked up as blood flows through tumour, the ‘Sunday Express’ reported.
So far it has proved 75 per cent effective at detecting early cancer in a number of small trials, say the scientists.
Dr James Mackay, an oncologist and researcher at University College London, is helping to launch the blood test for private patients.
“This test will be particularly useful for younger women who are at risk of developing breast cancer. “They tend to have denser breasts which mammograms cannot easily penetrate. We are suggesting they have a mammogram and combine it with this test so that there is a greater chance of detection,” he said.
Women shown by the test to have cancer will be given an MRI scan so that the tumour can be located, checked and, if necessary, removed, according to the scientists.
Cancer doctors believe that blood testing for early breast cancer could become routine in five years. The Diagenic BCtect test is currently being evaluated by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and an National Health Service trial involving 6,000 women at high risk of developing breast cancer is to start next year.

Recently, at the annual Summer Line Show of LG Electronics, the company unveiled its latest LCD (SL80 series) and LED (SL90 series) HDTVs. Both the HDTVs feature a single edge-to-edge glass panel over an ultra-slim bezel, creating a sophisticated look that turns heads, no matter if the TV is on or off.

To achieve dramatically thin profile and deliver superior picture quality for compelling visual experience, the SL80 series make use of slim CCFL technology with TruMotion 240Hz. The SL80 series is less than 1.8 inches thick and is available in 42-, 47-, and 55-inch class screen sizes. The SL80 will be available in August, 2009 for $1,599.95, $1,899.95 and $2,799.95 respectively.

On the other hand, to provide enhanced picture quality and energy efficiency, the SL90 utilizes LED display technology. The SL90 series will be released by the end of this year and will be available in 42- and 47-inch class screen sizes. The prices will be announced later.

It’s easy just going into a shop and coming out with a laptop. But it shouldn’t work like that. First, you must match the machine with your prime needs. If document editing, email and browsing is all you need, a basic, entry level laptop (13.3-15 inch) will do. Even a 10-inch netbook may be enough. Handling graphics, images or video regularly? Or heavy on gaming? Get a high-end machine with a graphics processor.
Know your budget
Choose a processor, memory, hard disk, screen-size and weight according to your requirements and then balance them to fit your budget best. A base configuration today should comprise: 2.0-GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 13.3-inch screen, 3.5 hours battery life, multiple USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, and Bluetooth. No matter what you buy, advancing technology will ensure that it will be outdated in a couple of years.
Google for a review
Computers are unreliable, but humans are even more unreliable. Don’t leave it to the dealer to choose for you. He may have vested interests. And don’t fall for a laptop just because it looks snazzy — unless you only want some “lap candy”! Always physically check out a recommended model — or whatever takes your fancy — then deploy Google to find reviews to ascertain the good, the bad, and the ugly about it before forking out your cash.
Battery life
The attention span of a computer is only as long as its electrical cord. If long battery life doesn’t seem very important to you, remember the prime reason you’re buying a portable computer is to have the convenience of being able to work/play untethered to your desk. And many a time, you will not be near a power source. Hence, a long battery life is very convenient, if not vital. Try and buy a laptop with a 6 or 8 cell battery. Look for something that gives you at least 3.5 to 4 hours of battery life at least. To keep the battery in shipshape, use the laptop on battery at least twice a week, if not more often.
Variations can be huge
Never blindly follow the herd. Or hearsay. Just as car models from the same manufacturer differ in build, quality and performance, laptops and notebooks from one company can vary hugely. Just because your pal’s two-year Toshiba laptop is still a smoothie, doesn’t necessarily mean every Toshiba will be a scorcher.
Extended warranty
Murphy’s law says: if anything can go wrong, it will. This couldn’t be more true for laptops in which any component — from the relatively inexpensive adapter to the very expensive screen — can go bust anytime. It always makes money sense to buy an extended warranty with your laptop. This stretches the warranty of your laptop one to two years beyond the mandatory first year. An extra Rs. 5,000 to 8,000 initially will give you peace of mind and wallet for the next two to three years.
