seaswarm robot to clean up oil spills

Using a cutting edge nanotechnology, researches at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a robotic prototype that could autonomously navigate the surface of oceans to collect surface oil and process it on site. The system called Seaswarm, is a fleet of vehicles that may make cleaning up future oil spills both less expensive and more efficient than current skimming methods.

The seaswarm robot uses a conveyor belt covered with a thin nanowire mesh to absorb oil. The fabric, developed by MIT’s visiting associate professor Francesco Stellacci, can absorb up to twenty times its own weight in oil while repelling water. By heating up the material, the oil can be removed and burnt locally and the nanofabric reused.

VoIP vs PSTN

When somebody refers to “traditional” telecom as against VoIP, he is likely to be referring to dear old PSTN! Our nation’s telephone network, and that of most others for that matter, works over what is known as the public switched telephone network or PSTN. Some also call it the plain-old telephone service (POTS)!

There is nothing so plain about it though. It is a worldwide network of telephone lines, fibre-optic cables, microwave transmission links, cellular networks, communications satellites and undersea telephone cables. This network is interconnected by switching centres that enable telephones across the world to connect each other using a uniform numbering system. The whole setup is based on circuit switched networking–that is, a circuit or channel is established between the various nodes and terminals before the users communicate, as if the nodes were physically connected with an electric circuit. The PSTN is a reasonably tech-savvy, digital system that include mobile as well as fixed telephones.

However, with the growing popularity of internet protocol(IP) based networks, especially the internet, varied methods, tools, protocols and standard have emerged to enable the transmission of voice and multimedia content over these networks. Essentially, voice over IP or VoIP is a bundle of technologies that enables IP based networks to be used as communication networks too. While PSTN is circuit-switched, VoIP is packet-switched. It sends voice or multimedia as data packers on an IP network.

VoIP got its big break in India

VoIP remains subject to several regulations by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). There was a time when it was seen as completely illegal, but now authorised service providers are allowed to provide VoIP services to the public. The legality of VoIP remains a big question in several countries because there is no regulatory framework, no uniformity in services and standards, and no way to clearly differentiate information services from telecommunications!

A few years ago, VoIP got its big break in India when the TRAI gave its approval for the logical partitioning of PSTN and closed user group (CUG) networks. Standards such as the session initiation protocol (SIP) also emerged to enable integration of legacy or hybrid systems with newer IP based ones. As a result, companies could merge their voice and data networks and reduce their investment therien.

TouchMagix sensor

TouchMagix hardware comprise of a high-end PC, a projector and its proprietary TouchMagix sensor. The sensor feeds signals to the PC software, which recognises human gestures/touch and generates an XML feed on loopback interface.

Touch magix is also available in two versions: MotionMagix and MagixTouch. MotionMagix is gesture sensing product that recognises free space movements, like the movement of a hand, and converts the hand location/movement into coordinates for the application to use and perform the action as per instructions. It has two sub-categories called MagixFloor and MagixWall.

MagixTouch, on the other hand, creates multi touch-interactive displays using optical touch technology.

HRP-4 "slim athlete"

HRP-4 stands nearly 1.5 metres tall and has 34 moving joints, with seven in each arm, as well as fingers that can move precisely than earlier HRP models.

The robot has been developed by bridge builder Kawada Industries and National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology(AIST).

New sorting function for Gmail

Google introduces a new sorting feature for its e-mail service to help users gain control over the flow of information.

The Gmail inbox is now offering a view that shows the most important news first.

An algorithm evaluates specific properties, such as whether a user is reading e-mails from a particular sender, and if they respond. The mail can also be assessed for an important new manual on the Plus / Minus “button.

“Says this is an adaptive function,” Google Stefan Keuchel.

He also made assurances about the protection of privacy: information about the contacts is especially important to use Google exclusively for the new function.
